# How to read OSHA 300A injury records — TRIR, DART and their limits — workplace-injury-records

> What Form 300A contains, how TRIR and DART are computed, what the industry median means, and what the figures cannot tell you.

## How to read these records

### Who files

Establishments with **250 or more employees** in industries not exempted by OSHA, and those with
**20 to 249 employees** in industries listed in OSHA's 300A table, must submit their Form 300A each
year. Smaller establishments and exempt industries are absent — absence here says nothing about safety.

### The rates

- **TRIR** (total recordable incident rate) = recordable cases × 200,000 ÷ hours worked. 200,000
hours is 100 full-time workers for a year.
- **DART** = cases with days away, restriction or job transfer × 200,000 ÷ hours worked.
- A rate is left blank when hours are missing, zero, or inconsistent with headcount (fewer than 200 or more
than 4,000 hours per employee per year) — a rate on a wrong denominator is worse than none.

### The industry median

Each rate is shown next to the median of establishments **filing with OSHA** in the same 4-digit
NAICS industry and the same year, when at least 20 have a valid rate. It is not the national average published
by the Bureau of Labor Statistics: filers are a regulatory population, not a sample.

### Joining the years

OSHA's establishment number is not stable across the collection. Years are joined when the identifier and the
ZIP code match, or the EIN, ZIP code and street match, or the street, ZIP code and first word of the name match —
and never when that would put two different filings in the same year. Where an amended summary replaced an
earlier one, the latest is kept.

### What the figures cannot tell you

- Recording or reporting an injury does not mean the employer or employee was at fault, that an OSHA rule was
violated, or that the employee is eligible for workers' compensation.
- OSHA cautions that concluding an establishment is the most or least dangerous solely on its rates would be
inappropriate. This site ranks no one; its lists are alphabetical.
- Inspections, citations and penalties are a different OSHA dataset and are not shown here.
